Synopsis

 

In a village in South India, a road divides hope and oppression. Four Dalits, the former “untouchables,” wage an intimate struggle to survive: debt, labor exploitation, and caste segregation. A rare and sensitive look at everyday resistance shaken by the pandemic crisis.

JALIL nordman

Jalil Nordman is a Research Director at the French National Research Institute for Sustainable Development (IRD) and a documentary filmmaker. He was based at the French Institute of Pondicherry (IFP) in India between 2016 and 2021. His research focuses on various dimensions of labor in countries of the Global South, addressing topics such as working conditions, caste and gender discrimination, employment and household vulnerability, and the consequences of migration on labor markets.

His previous regional focus included North and West Africa, Madagascar, Vietnam, Bangladesh, and now India. In South India, he currently co-directs the Observatory of Rural Dynamics and Inequalities (ODRIIS), monitoring rural regions of Tamil Nadu. He began creating audiovisual projects to make his research accessible to a wider audience. One Side of the Road is his first feature-length documentary as writer-director, born from his desire to make his field research accessible to a broader public.
