Synopsis
Through the practice of Moring, the film explores the former slave routes linking Madagascar, the Comoros, Reunion Island, and Mozambique. Moring is far more than a martial art; it is a shared cultural heritage, shaped over centuries by enslaved people, indentured laborers, and today their descendants. “Moring” is thus an invitation to reconnect with a past that continues to resonate in the present, through a living bodily language that allows the peoples of the southwest Indian Ocean to reclaim their dignity and their history.

Sami Chalak
Sami Chalak was born in Brittany in 1970. After earning a BTS degree in audiovisual studies, he quickly turned toward documentary filmmaking. His first experiences took him to South America, before he eventually settled in Madagascar, a formative land that would shape his relationship to images and to otherness. Five years later, he moved closer still, settling in La Réunion, where he founded his own production company. In search of meaning within this new anchorage, his work shifted toward historical and social documentary, extending a personal reflection on exile, memory, and territory—while simultaneously pursuing his second passion: cinematography and editing for wildlife documentaries.
