Synopsis

 

In 1960, a young neuropsychiatrist discovers Reunion Island when he comes to fill in temporarily at the Saint-Paul hospital. The stay becomes a lifetime. Through his 16 mm films and his intimate perspective, this film recounts the patients, the asylum, and the slow transformation of psychiatry on the island.

Danielle Jay

Danielle Jay, born on September 27, 1941, arrived in Réunion at the age of 12. She studied nursing and developed a passion for photographing rural Réunion, which led to the photo book La Réunion Lontan – Entre Cirques et Pitons (2025 reissue), as well as for video, resulting in the film L’école des Hauts in 2011.
