The indian ocean international film festival aims to shine a light on the cinematic creations emerging from the territories of the Indian Ocean. Through a selection of films in competition—including feature-length documentaries, short fiction films, and short documentaries—the festival highlights emerging talent and the unique perspectives they bring to the region.
With a professional jury, the FIFOI establishes itself as a key competition, amplifying the voices and cultures of the Indian Ocean on the international film scene.
This year, the FIFOI is also launching a Film Market, contributing to the growth of the region’s audiovisual and film industry. This event is designed to provide professionals with a space for exchange, networking, and collaboration, fostering cooperation between industry players and neighboring countries.
Two filmmakers visit the juvenile detention wing of the Maison Centrale d’Antanimora in Antananarivo, where about a hundred young boys are incarcerated. There, a cinema workshop comes to life: the detainees are introduced to filmmaking, explore film ideas… and share their stories.
Surya, a young ragpicker, is faced with the prospect of an arranged marriage by her father, who hopes to improve their living conditions. Blending fiction and documentary, the film focuses on a community of ragpickers trying to find their place in the world amid garbage, scorching heat, and forced marriages.
A few hours before the start of the new year, an ambitious woman, a broken man and a young girl in search of freedom come face to face with implacable truths. Under the shock of revelations, souls are set ablaze.
Nothing will ever be the same again.
