Short synopsis
Rouge outremer tells the story of the witch hunt in post-colonial Réunion from the perspective of Marianne, a stunningly beautiful Black maid in the service of Prefect Perreau-Pradier.
Statement of intent
I want to tell the dark period of the island’s history: the time of the witch hunts. From 1950 to 1970, the postcolonial power hunted down communist activists. The fear of the red wave justified the use of both legal and illegal means to crush dissenting movements. I also want to address the issue of social transgression through the character of Marianne, the Black heroine of the series. Is it possible to reconcile a rapid social ascent with loyalty to one’s family of origin? Lastly, I aim to show how individual anger can align with a collective destiny in the hope of a better future.
