Lo vant Héva

Lo vant Héva

Short Synopsis
Héva, a young black girl from a working-class background, is thrown out onto the street by her father because she is pregnant by Émile, a man from a good family. She is then taken in by Émile’s parents. They want her to be examined by a doctor friend, but the consultation lasts unusually long.

Statement of intent

In the 1960s in Réunion, under the influence of Deputy Michel Debré, an aggressive anti-natalist policy led to forced abortions and sterilizations of thousands of black and mixed-race women from working-class backgrounds, without their consent, even though abortion was illegal in France. This scandal, which remains largely unknown, raises questions about gender, race, and class domination. Through the character of Héva, partly inspired by my mother, I wish to do justice to these wronged and forgotten women, victims of a violence that denied them the right to control their own bodies.

Before The Feast

Before The Feast

Short Synopsys
In the wetlands of Cochin, India, Vincent, an elderly farmer, and his wife Vincy, the last cultivator of the rare Pokkali rice, strive to protect their salt-resistant seeds from the fury of rising waters. As aging takes its toll, will their legacy survive?

Statement of intent

In the estuarine wetlands of Cochin, Kerala, the Ramsar site, a UNESCO World Heritage area, preserves an ancient agricultural system that quietly endures.

When catastrophic floods struck Kerala in 2018, the wetlands remained untouched—protected by Pokkali farming, a rare below-sea-level system that thrives in saltwater. Vincent and Vincy, among its last practitioners, embody resilience in a rapidly changing world.

As a filmmaker based in Cochin, I aim to bring to the screen a vérité documentary centered on characters who embody a story of survival, adaptation, and Indigenous wisdom.

I am looking for collaborators to join me on this journey.

KARAM’S SHOES

KARAM’S SHOES

Short Synopsis

Karam, ten years old, fakes his exam results to get a new pair of shoes from his father. But when he loses them at a wedding, despair drives him to steal another pair. Soon, he learns that karma has the power to catch up with us all.

Statement of intent

The laws of karma are a philosophy deeply rooted in Indian culture. The title “Karam’s Shoes” has a double meaning: “Karam’s Shoes” and “The Shoes of Karma.” The story begins with “Karam’s Shoes” – Karam’s quest for a new pair of shoes – and ends with “The Shoes of Karma” – the consequences of his actions, reflecting the laws of karma as explained in the Bhagavad Gita. By telling this story through the eyes of children – our future citizens and those of tomorrow – I aim to convey a valuable moral lesson: “What you sow, you shall reap,” and promote a better world while entertaining the audience.

Birthday, me

Birthday, me

Short synopsis

Virginie, a thirty-something wonder woman, manages her life with a masterful hand. However, when the pet chicken ruins her birthday cake, she cracks and kicks her husband, child, and parents out of the house. Virginie will find herself alone for a few hours with an unexpected ally. Will she be able to take advantage of it?

Statement of intent

Today, despite decades of feminist struggles and efforts to deconstruct what the perfect woman should be, many of us are still determined to embody this extraordinary woman at all costs. What pressure! So how do we question and even rid ourselves of this injunction to juggle multiple roles without failing? With Anniversaire moi, we want to offer a cathartic response, not with anger or lamentation, but with humor and irony, to this diktat of perfection. Above all, we want to laugh and make others laugh, while exploring a moment of total relaxation. In short, a film about letting go!

Amour an Diab

Amour an Diab

Short synopsis

Tarto, Vincent, and Tiguss enter the fierce competition of the Karmon, a Malbar carnival known for its malevolent nature in Réunion. By transforming their sugar worker uniforms into dazzling warrior costumes, they will embody evil spirits and demons that have been part of this ominous marriage for over a century.

Statement of intent

I discovered the Karmon, a nearly forgotten love myth, after having lived in Réunion for over 25 years. Amidst golden strips of fabric, Halloween masks, sharp screams, whistles, drums, and fragmented dances… an enchantment seizes me. Since 2012, I’ve been archiving this Creole carnival theater of Hindu origin. I meet Tarto, Vincent, and Tiguss, who are making flashy costumes that will ultimately be torn apart. A voice wanders over the images, telling the stories of colonial iron. The sugar factory haunts the frame and the neighborhood. Chimneys, vapors, machines, and crushings bring the stains of history, which the Karmon sweeps away. Amour an diab blends the textures and sounds of this transcendental experience.

Jean-Marc LACAZE experiments in visual arts, live performances, and the field of author-driven documentary filmmaking. His concerns and work oscillate between syncretism, travel, “mythomania,” humor, and societal issues.

The production company:

Les films de l’autre cougar is particularly drawn to self-taught filmmakers and those from schools that promote free thought and the renewal of forms. The company brings to the French film landscape auteurs who stand out from the traditional cinema families by what they have to show and their freedom of expression. All of our filmmakers formulate their own social critique, drawing on their sensitivities to invoke poetry, humor, or drama. They represent a generation of filmmakers concerned with the world around them and its political issues, driven by the desire to elevate reality and shift perspectives.
