Mahamri

Short Synopsis
Arushi, a young bride, visits her mother for advice on the missing ingredient to intimacy. Caught between tradition and her own desires, a forbidden act in the kitchen threatens to change everything.

Statement of intent

Mahamri is a visually and emotionally powerful film that explores the unspoken struggles of young women facing cultural expectations regarding sex, identity, and the future. Set in a traditional Kenyan kitchen, the film centers on an intimate conversation between Arushi and her mother, Nitara. Arushi’s emotional journey oscillates between her desires and generational expectations, while Nitara embodies cultural norms and inherited traditions. As the mahamri fry, the sizzling oil mirrors Arushi’s inner turmoil. Like Arushi, I have felt the weight of silence and the fear of tarnishing my reputation as a woman.
