The Fiancée from beyond

The Fiancée from beyond

Short synopsis

The film A Noiva do Além (The Fiancée from Beyond) explores an ancient cultural practice involving the payment of a “lobolo” (or bride price) to “purchase” a woman. However, in certain cases, when the woman dies before the transaction is completed, the price increases, and the payment for her funeral is required.

Statement of intent

The ritual scenes will be interspersed with testimonies from people who practice lobolo after death. Our goal is to create a cinematic environment that will allow viewers to feel and understand the depth of these traditions.

In an increasingly globalized world, it’s easy to condemn practices that degrade women. However, it’s also essential to look beyond our own beliefs and practices and try to understand the complexity of traditions and rituals. By bringing visibility to these practices, we contribute to intercultural dialogue, offer an opportunity for learning, and promote a more realistic approach to the issue.

We hope that the film will contribute to fostering a broader debate about the relationship between men and women in African marriage, and more specifically between the living and the dead. Furthermore, we hope it will lead viewers to reflect personally on how we approach marriage and mourning, family traditions, and spiritual heritage.

Journey to the Kingdom of Plants

Journey to the Kingdom of Plants

Short synopsis

Sébastien Wohlhauser, a passionate Swiss botanist, explores the relationship between humans and plants in Madagascar. This film unveils an exceptional flora, Malagasy plant traditions, and the threats to this heritage: deforestation and looting. The practices related to plants become a crucial political issue for the country’s future.

Statement of intent

I met Sébastien fifteen years ago under unfortunate circumstances. From this tragic event, a long and strong friendship was born. Both of us speak Malagasy, and we have both started families in Madagascar. But what has always mattered most to us is sharing, exchanging, and integrating into this country, trying to help it in our respective fields.

I followed Sébastien on his missions with my camera to witness his commitment. Through Sébastien, I will create an indirect portrait while he teaches us about plants and what they represent for the Malagasy, who also use them for healing. This film aims to highlight the link between nature and the population while addressing the issues of overexploitation of plants on an island that has no fuel resources.

How can we anticipate? How can we develop resources? How do we manage natural stocks to prevent them from disappearing? Sébastien points out the main flaws in the exploitation of nature using interactive maps that provide evidence of the disappearance of the baobab forest, in particular. But who is responsible? The individuals or industrial exploitation? What rules need to be respected?

Short synopsis

In Madagascar, in 1977, two young mixed-race sisters were separated by a repatriation policy implemented by France and Madagascar. Since then, they have never seen each other again. Forty years later, I decide to trace the steps of this buried past by accompanying the promised reunion between my mother and my aunt on the island.

Statement of intent

ZAFY PETITE FILLE DE is a family investigation that tells the story of my mother’s return to Madagascar and her reunion with her sister. This journey becomes an opportunity for me to understand the reasons behind their separation. Why had they never seen each other again, despite their daily phone conversations for 40 years? My family story then plunges us into a more collective memory, that of the particular fate of mixed-race children in Madagascar after independence. Through images from the present and archival footage from the past, the film explores themes of transmission, memory, and exile for two generations of Malagasy women.

POWA

POWA

Short synopsis

Through the stories of these three women, we see the dedication of an organization called POWA, which provides support and services to survivors who feel isolated and don’t know where to turn.

Statement of intent

A woman recently stated on Twitter that abuse towards women benefits all men, because even when they don’t personally commit it, it allows women to stay in fear and under control. Stories like this, where survivors speak out and an army of women from all races come to their aid, are important. They show us that women will not remain in fear and control. At the top of Fezekile’s coffin was a banner from the One in Nine campaign, with the words ‘SOLIDARITY WITH THOSE WHO SPEAK,’ and that’s what this film is about: solidarity with those who speak.

Rouge outremer

Rouge outremer

Short synopsis

Rouge outremer tells the story of the witch hunt in post-colonial Réunion from the perspective of Marianne, a stunningly beautiful Black maid in the service of Prefect Perreau-Pradier.

Statement of intent

I want to tell the dark period of the island’s history: the time of the witch hunts. From 1950 to 1970, the postcolonial power hunted down communist activists. The fear of the red wave justified the use of both legal and illegal means to crush dissenting movements. I also want to address the issue of social transgression through the character of Marianne, the Black heroine of the series. Is it possible to reconcile a rapid social ascent with loyalty to one’s family of origin? Lastly, I aim to show how individual anger can align with a collective destiny in the hope of a better future.

Noughts and Crosses

Noughts and Crosses

Short synopsis

A young woman makes contact with a stranger during chemotherapy and discovers that there are no guarantees in life or death.

Statement of intent

Noughts & Crosses stands out to me because it exposes the complexities of real life—things are not black and white, but rather shades of gray. Even when one accepts a terminal diagnosis, it reminds us that there is still life to be lived. As a filmmaker, I want to explore stories centered around the gray areas, where absolutes don’t exist. When I look at Tana, our main protagonist, I’ve been in her shoes, feeling betrayed by my body and my healthy life choices, only to fall ill. I know the feeling of asking, “Why me? What did I do to deserve this?” As I grow both as a filmmaker and a human in the world, I have learned and understood more that nothing is owed to us—neither the good nor the bad. Life is about making the most of what you have. That’s the key point I hope the audience will take away. I think many will be able to recognize a moment in their lives when they found themselves in Tana’s position, torn between hope and despair. It’s a moment so familiar to many of us. And we understand that it takes a lot of courage to move forward—until Songa Mbele.

Noughts & Crosses would be my first foray into the world of fiction, and I am excited and proud to work with a strong and diverse pan-African team of filmmakers who are also passionate about creating nuanced African stories.

No Limiar do Abismo

No Limiar do Abismo

Short synopsis

During a civil war, in the aftermath of a massacre in a Mozambican village, two wounded soldiers from opposing sides, Manuel and Joaquim, must overcome their mutual hatred while confronting their own humanity. When a lost young girl becomes their shared responsibility amid landmines and chaos, they discover the true cost of war and the fragility of peace.

Statement of intent

In Mozambique, ravaged by war, two enemy soldiers wake up in a village reduced to ashes. No reinforcements. No common language. Just silence, eyes fixed on them, until a solitary child appears. What starts as a deadlock turns into a brutal trial of survival, fear, and the unspoken weight of violence. Stripped of politics and pretenses, No Limiar do Abismo is a relentless and profoundly human thriller that forces us to ask: when the war ends, what remains of the men who fought it?

My balls on the table

My balls on the table

Short synopsis

Serge, a forty-year-old man from Réunion who has been sterilized, is confronted by a child who claims to be his son. This “nonexistent son” embodies the societal pressures surrounding fatherhood. Through dialogues, memories, and encounters, Serge delves into his rejection of parenthood, the weight of the colonial past, and the struggles between individual freedom and societal expectations.

Statement of intent

Before my vasectomy in 2014, I was questioned about my refusal to have children. After the procedure, the misunderstanding evolved: it became a loss of masculinity for some men, and a feminist hero for certain women. However, this choice was neither social nor political, but personal. Through the sudden appearance of my imaginary child, I question my motivations, reveal my contradictions, my traumas, and my relationship with my body. As the exchanges unfold, I revisit my blind spots and invite, through a racial and gendered lens, a collective introspection.

Mahamri

Mahamri

Short Synopsis
Arushi, a young bride, visits her mother for advice on the missing ingredient to intimacy. Caught between tradition and her own desires, a forbidden act in the kitchen threatens to change everything.

Statement of intent

Mahamri is a visually and emotionally powerful film that explores the unspoken struggles of young women facing cultural expectations regarding sex, identity, and the future. Set in a traditional Kenyan kitchen, the film centers on an intimate conversation between Arushi and her mother, Nitara. Arushi’s emotional journey oscillates between her desires and generational expectations, while Nitara embodies cultural norms and inherited traditions. As the mahamri fry, the sizzling oil mirrors Arushi’s inner turmoil. Like Arushi, I have felt the weight of silence and the fear of tarnishing my reputation as a woman.

The Crabs’ Tangent

The Crabs’ Tangent

Short synopsis

Ly, a professional farmer and amateur speaker, has never left Antananarivo, but the day has come to take one of the planes he sees flying above him. With his eldest daughter and his filmmaker friend, he travels to Mauritius and Réunion to find a shortcut in the face of the climate emergency, then returns to look for the path that could change his life.

Statement of intent

It’s the story of a father and his daughter, farmers in Antananarivo. The father is a good student of the Ministry of Agriculture and chemicals, while his daughter was profoundly influenced at a young age by a visit to an ecological village. Their filmmaker friend takes them to Mauritius and Réunion to discover a path that can be taken diagonally, like crabs—a counter-model to the system they are victims of. Back in Madagascar, worn down by a series of tragedies, will they take the detour suggested by their friend?

A film with a quirky, imaginative tone, enhanced by animation and puppet sequences, and the ironic voiceover of Claudia Tagbo.
