Synopsis

In the peaceful lagoon of Mayotte, Mariama and her father go on a daily fishing trip and in search of the dugout that has been stolen from them. In the distance, McCombe, an underwater volcano, rumbles.

Germain Le Carpentier

Germain is a screenwriter, director and cinematographer who lives in Mayotte, in the Indian Ocean. After studying graphic design, he multiplied the cinematographic experiences between Europe, the United States and Argentina. Since 2020, he has mainly dedicated himself to making short films. First with a diptych on faith and mourning: The Beginnings (2020), awarded at Brest European Short Film Festival, then The Sky Has Been Broken (2022), shot in an active abbey and presented in the revelation selection of the Jean Carmet Film Festival. He is currently collaborating on the development of the film sector in the most isolated department of France. It is in this context that he directed Laka (the dugout), the first film in Shimaoré, the official language of the island.
